Federal TEACH Grant eligibility requirements
Federal TEACH Grant is a federal aid program, officially called Federal TEACH Grant (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education).
Rules last reviewed
Eligibility
- Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, OR score above the 75th percentile on at least one section of a nationally normed graduate or undergraduate admissions test (not a placement test).
- Must be enrolled in a TEACH-Grant-eligible program of study that prepares the student to teach in a high-need field.
- Must sign an Agreement to Serve, committing to teach for at least 4 years within 8 years of completing the program, in a high-need field at a school serving low-income students.
- Must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 to continue receiving the grant each year; falling below 3.25 suspends eligibility until the GPA is restored.
- Must complete TEACH Grant counseling each year.
- Exceptions to the GPA/test-score requirement exist for current or former teachers and retirees pursuing certification through specific alternative routes.
- If the service obligation is not completed, the grant converts to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan that must be repaid with interest.
Award
Up to $4,000 per year, subject to annual federal funding adjustments.
