Federal SEOG eligibility requirements

Federal SEOG is a federal aid program, officially called Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).

Rules last reviewed

Eligibility

  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate student.
  • Must not have already earned a Bachelor's or first professional degree.
  • Must file the FAFSA and demonstrate exceptional financial need (lower SAI than typical Pell-eligible students).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible program.
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the enrolling school.
  • Must attend a school that participates in the FSEOG program (not all schools do).
  • Priority is given to students with the lowest SAIs who are also receiving a Federal Pell Grant; remaining funds may go to eligible students with low SAIs who do not receive Pell.

Award

Typically $100-$4,000 per year, depending on financial need, availability of funds at the institution, and other aid received. Unlike the Pell Grant, funding is limited per school and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis among eligible students.
